Volunteer commitment

Volunteers will commit to serving one 3-4 hour shift on the same day each week or one 3-4 hour shift biweekly on weekends.

  • Daytime programOne consistent shift/same day per weekMonday - Friday: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Evening programOne consistent shift/same day per weekMonday - Thursday: 5:30 p. m.to 8:30 p. m. Fridays: 5 p.m. to 7:30 p. m.

  • Weekend programOne biweekly shift/ 1st and 3rd or 2nd and 4th Saturday or Sunday2-4 hour shift between 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

  • Pet Therapy programWe are accepting daytime, evening, and weekend applications for the Pet Therapy program.

Steps to becoming an adult volunteer:

  1. Complete the online assessment tool at the bottom of this page and complete the online application

  2. Complete the interview process

  3. Complete online training courses

  4. Attend a Welcome Session

  5. Complete a new volunteer health check with the Children’s Health Occupational Health and Wellness Department. The health check will include the following requirements:

    • An annual TB test

    • Flu vaccination (during flu season)

    • Proof of MMR vaccination series or positive blood titer

    • Proof of Varicella vaccination series or positive blood titer

    • Proof of Tdap or Td within the past 10 years

    • Proof of Hepatitis B vaccination series and positive blood titer

  6. Start volunteering!

    • Purchase a volunteer uniform between $30 - $40

Volunteers most needed for the following positions:

Daytime program

Volunteer Role

Responsibilities

Ambassador

Provide timely and friendly assistance to patients, patient families, and guests in need of directions/escort, assist with deliveries of gifts and mail, assist with transferring belongings and escorting admitting or discharging patients.

Playroom

Provide support to the Child Life staff by providing or assisting with activities for patients who are in the playroom.

Unit Volunteer

Provide support to patients, families, and staff in the inpatient units by introducing new admits to hospital amenities, preparing rooms, escorting discharged patients, bedside sitting, and restocking supplies.

Surgery Services

Support patients, families, and staff in the Pre-Op, Post-Op, and PACU departments by preparing rooms, escorting discharged patients, bedside sitting, and restocking supplies.

Pet Therapy

Provide animal assisted therapy to patients, families, and staff using registered therapy dogs.

Evening Program

One consistent shift/same day per week

Monday - Thursday: 5:30 p. m. to 8:30 a. m. Fridays: 5 p.m. to 7:30 p. m.

Support patients & families visiting the ER by rounding on patient rooms and waiting room, preparing rooms, and restocking supplies.

Unit Volunteer

Provide support to patients, families, and staff in the inpatient units by introducing new admits to hospital amenities, preparing rooms, escorting discharged patients, bedside sitting, and restocking supplies.

Weekend Program

One biweekly shift/ 1st and 3rd or 2nd and 4th Saturday or Sunday

3-4 hour shift between 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
