Prior to EEG testing:
How to prepare?
Arrive with clean, dry hair. Tightly spaced hair waves, braids or extensions are discouraged because they can make it difficult to place the EEG electrodes on the scalp.
If your child has lice and nits in their hair, we will not be able to do the test. Please call us to have the test rescheduled.
Your child may eat normal meals and take medications as usual, unless otherwise instructed by your physician.
Bring a drink, snack and anything that your child will find comforting, such as a blanket or favorite toy.
Please remember to sleep deprive your child for the EEG test, per instructions given to you when scheduling the appointment and included below:
Infants < 6 months: Do not allow your child to sleep on the way to the exam. Bring a bottle and their favorite blanket or toy.
6 months – 2 years: Keep your child awake until testing time. Try not to let your child nap before the test.
3 – 6 years: Depending on your child’s normal sleep schedule, we recommend waking your child one-two hours earlier than usual. Do not let them nap before the test.
7 – 18 years: Depending on your child’s normal sleep schedule, we recommend that they go to sleep one-two hours past their normal bedtime and wake one-two hours earlier than usual.
What to expect?
Only
one
parent or guardian will be allowed in the room during the test. Other children and siblings cannot stay in the room during testing, as the patient is expected to sleep. Other children must be accompanied in the waiting room.
The EEG technician will explain the process.
Test results will be available from the referring physician at your child's follow-up appointment.
