As one of the nation's largest pediatric nephrology specialties, we care for more than 60 children with end-stage renal disease every year. We also managed more than 700 acute hemodialysis procedures and 22 kidney transplants in 2018. Our work doesn't stop there: UT Southwestern physicians practicing at Children's Health℠ are at the forefront of nephrology research, with four NIH-funded labs investigating everything from fetal hypertension mechanisms to the genes that drive kidney development.

Four Dynamic Laboratories at the Forefront of Research
Thanks to our partnership with UT Southwestern, our patients have access to the latest trials and therapies available in the field of nephrology. UT Southwestern physician-scientists practicing at Children’s Health include:
Michael Baum, M.D., is working toward a new generation of hypertension treatments, by leading a research lab that has contributed to more than 140 papers and 70 book chapters on ion transportation across renal epithelia. His lab’s most recent work aims to understand the mechanisms involved in the fetal programming of hypertension.
Keri Drake, M.D., is using mouse models to better understand the signaling pathways necessary for proper kidney formation and function. Dr. Drake’s research is focused on examining the role of the stroma in both normal development and disease.
Jyothsna Gattineni, M.D., studies the role of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), a phosphaturic hormone secreted by bone, in chronic kidney disease. Her lab recently developed an innovative mouse model that has a 50-fold increase in FGF23 levels. Dr. Gattineni’s team is using this model to determine if FGF23 contributes to bone, vascular and cardiac disease in patients with chronic kidney disease.
Matthias Wolf, M.D., studies the regulation of tubular ion channels by urinary proteins and how dysregulation of these specific ion channels contributes to common disorders such as kidney stones and diabetes mellitus. Another focus of his research interest is the development of a therapy for uromodulin storage disease.
